CBD can be derived from the hemp plant with the help of many techniques and distillation is one such process that can be used for extracting CBD. The process of distillation is different from the rest of the extraction processes like the solvent method because it is based on boiling points while other methods are based on the solubility of the substance. It is an effective mode of extraction because it will help in obtaining a filtered form of CBD. The compound obtained from this type of extraction is known as CBD distillate.
The distillation process starts by obtaining liquid hemp extract and mixing it with alcohol and oil. This compound will be having all the elements present in hemp plants like cannabinoids, terpenes, chlorophyll, wax, etc. CBD distillate is obtained from such a solution through the following procedures.
It is the first step in making CBD distillate. The hemp extract in the liquid form, which was obtained by mixing oil and alcohol, will be put in a freezer. Later the frozen extract will be turned into a liquid by heating it. This will separate the wax, fats, and lipids from the solution. Later, the liquid will be passed through a filtering chamber to make completely separate semi-solid elements from the extract. This process of filtering the extract by freezing a solution is known as winterization.
Short Path Distillation
After the winterization process, the resulting solution will be in pure liquid form. The oil that was mixed at the beginning of the procedure will also get removed during winterization. The process of distillation starts by heating the liquid at its boiling point. This will help in separating CBD from other substances present in the solution because every element will be having different boiling points. During this process, the alcohol that was mixed in the beginning procedure will also be removed. The CBD obtained after this distillation will be pure and highly concentrated.
CBD obtained after the two-step purification is known as CBD distillate. Even though it is a pure form of CBD, it is different from CBD isolate because, for making CBD isolate, the extract will be passed through one more procedure called crystallization. This process will help in converting CBD into solid form by freezing or by rearranging the molecular structure with the help of pressurized gas. Whatever be the case, CBD distillate is used as a substitute for CBD isolate in many industries.
