Methods Of Extracting CBD

Science is now beginning to unveil the many medical mysteries behind the benefits of using CBD. In the past decades, we observed that CBD is gained immense popularity and therefore it is being extracted and manufactured in several variants. Creams, oils, and edibles, etc are a few of the examples of these variants.

Like we know already, CBD is famed due to its potential to heal a host of diseases and discomforts. The best thing about the healing process lies in the part where CBD positively interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) of humans making sure that they don’t feel euphoric.

There are several ways to extract this mystic component – CBD.  We will be discussing a few of the extraction processes in this article.

Methods Of CBD Extraction

The main aim of the extraction process undertaken is to extract pure CBD that can easily be transformed into pure natural CBD oil which is easily consumable by humans. The following are the methods of extracting CBD.

Method 1 – CO2 Extraction

This particular CBD extraction process makes use of pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2). Although this is an effective as well as a safe method of extracting CBD, the process is expensive as it uses expensive equipment. The equipment freezes the gas and transforms it into a cold liquid form. CO2 extraction is subdivided into three categories.

Supercritical

As the name suggests, this process involves increasing the temperature and putting pressure on the cold liquid CO2. At this point, the previously gaseous CO2 is now in a supercritical state and can potentially adapt to the properties of gas and liquid forms. When put in simple terms, at this stage, the CO2 can fill any container like gas, plus it will be denser like any liquid. This feature makes it particularly suitable for Cannabinol extraction, needless to mention the residual substance being fit for human consumption.

Subcritical

This process utilizes both low pressure and low temperature. The process involves long hours. As an added disadvantage, there is also a drawback of this process having considerably lower yields. The best advantage of making use of this variant of the CO2 extraction process is that it doesn’t damage the terpenes present in the cannabis Sativa plant.

Mild-Critical

This variant of the CO2 extraction process completely justifies its name as it ranges between the supercritical and subcritical processes.

The top three advantages related to CO2 extraction is that it is safe and effective, together with the extract being pure. However, two significant disadvantages associated with this process of CBD extraction are, first that it is an expensive process and second that it tests the technical ability. This extraction process must never be attempted by amateurs.

Method 2 – Olive Oil Extraction

The initial steps involved in this process of CBD extraction using olive oil can be done easily in your homes. The first step is the decarboxylation of the raw materials. To put it in layman’s language, the first step of this extraction process is to heat the raw material to the ideal temperature for a set period. This step is initiated to specifically activate the chemical contents of the plant.

The recommended heating process involves exclusive heating for 60 minutes at 248 degrees Fahrenheit. If the time available is limited, the heating process can even be completed within 30 minutes, by heating the raw materials at a temperature of 284 degrees Fahrenheit.  After the completion of this step, the residual plant material is mixed with olive oil and again heated for nearly 2 hours at a temperature, not less than 212 degrees Fahrenheit. The resulting substance is pure natural CBD.

Like every other extraction process, this too has its pros and cons. Pros include the process being inexpensive and safe. On the other hand, the cons include the process having lower yields when compared with the others. Yet another disadvantage of using this process is that the residual substance of this process is perishable and so it has to be stored in cool places at all times.

Method 3 – Solvent Extraction

This extraction process of CBD makes use of solvents such as ethanol, butane, or low-grade alcohol. The presence of ethanol in the extraction process makes the end product fit for the consumption of humans. However, this extraction process also extracts chlorophyll that could potentially cause side effects. Removal of chlorophyll is possible through further filtering, however, there is a risk of reduction in the oil potency. The greatest advantage of adopting this process is that the process is straightforward and thus it is eligible to be used in the production of a large number of products. The disadvantage of using this extraction process is that the use of butane makes the oil dangerous and potentially harmful with standard filtering.

The impact of each of the CBD extraction processes differs from one another in terms of the purity as well as the strength of the products derived. Therefore, due care must be taken when purchasing a bottle of your favorite CBD.
