The awareness about the benefits of CBD, among the general population, has escalated over the years. And as a result, many are turning to CBD to relieve their stress and pain. Many others are now curious about the ability of CBD to help with disorders like Raynaud’s disease.
The Raynaud’s Disease
Raynaud’s disease is a circulatory ailment. As per the reports of the National Institutes of Health, the disorder affects 3-5% of adults across the world. People diagnosed with this disease encounter tightening of the blood vessels. This is called vasospasm and occurs as a response to anxiety, stress, or cold temperatures. Even though the episodes occur for a short duration, they can be very much uncomfortable for the person.
Symptoms Of Raynaud’s Disease
One of the most commonly experienced symptoms of Raynaud’s disease is a change in color of the toes or fingers on being exposed to cold or when stressed out. In extreme cases, the fingers can turn blue. The color change is due to the narrowing of the blood vessels that restricts the flow of blood. When the blood vessels relax and circulation turns normal, the fingers can turn red. The disease is often accompanied by tingling or throbbing pain. Some of the other symptoms of Raynaud’s disease include:
- Difficulty moving fingers and toes
In some of the severe cases, the disease could lead to skin sores and death of tissues. Therefore, proper and timely management of this medical condition is inevitable.
Using CBD For Raynaud’s Disease
There is only very little research on using CBD for Raynaud’s disease. Nevertheless, there is evidence from some studies which claims that CBD could relax the blood vessels and improve the circulation of blood. In 2017, a double-blind crossover trial was conducted to find the effect of CBD on blood pressure. The participants of the study were administered 600 mg of CBD or a placebo. The participants were made to undertake a series of stressful activities after two hours and the effects of various types of stress like mental stress, cold-induced stress, and exercise-induced stress on the blood pressure of the participants were measured.
The results of the study revealed that CBD can abate the rise in blood pressure caused by stress and resting blood pressure. The effects of CBD were most evident in the case of cold-induced stress which can be particularly useful for people suffering from Raynaud’s disease. The researchers of the study culminated that CBD could help decrease the vasoconstriction induced by stress and cold.
